SARAH McCARTHEY, PH.D

Sarah McCarthey teaches reading and language arts courses in the teacher preparation program and graduate courses in children’s writing and discourse. Her research focuses on students’ identities as literacy learners and writing instruction. She has authored three books, more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles, and 15 book chapters. Before completing her Ph.D at Michigan State University, she taught in the Salt Lake City School District for eight years. Sarah is co-editor (with Mark Dressman and Paul Prior) of the journal Research in the Teaching of English and co-investigator (with Gail Hawisher and Libbie Morley) of the University of Illinois Writing Project

Mark Dressman teaches courses in the secondary English education program and graduate courses in reading and theories of language and literacy within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. His research interests include reconceptualizing the life and literacy histories of struggling adolescent students and the application of social theory in language and literacy research across cultural contexts. He is also Reviews Editor for the Journal of Curriculum Studies.

JUDY ABBOTT, PH.D
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR & ASSISTANT DEAN FOR TEACHER EDUCATION, WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
Judy Abbott coordinates the professional preparation programs at West Virginia University and teaches Literacy Studies in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction / Literacy Studies, including reading, literacy studies, and children's literature courses in the teacher education program and in the graduate programs. Her research interests include children's writing, teacher education, and children's literature.

JANE ABE, MS
TEACHER, SALT LAKE CITY (UTAH) SCHOOL DISTRICT
Jane Abe has taught for many years in the Extended Learning Program in the Salt Lake City School District. She has served as curriculum coordinator for the program, and has trained hundreds of teachers in the Talents Unlimited model of creative/critical thinking. Jane has served as President of the Utah Association of Gifted Children, and has taught Creativity Seminars through both Utah State University and the University of Utah.

CONSULTANT, INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, OTTAWA, CANADA
Michael Borish is a specialist in international development with a focus on financial sector reform and business development in emerging markets. President of the firm that bears his name and author of more than 15 publications in internationally recognized journals, Michael earned his Masters degree at the University of Chicago.

VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT SUCCESS, DEAN OF EXTENDED LEARNING, NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY
Vice-President for Student Success and Dean of the College of Extended Learning at New Mexico State University, Carmen Gonzales is Project Director for the Regional Education Technology Assistance (RETA) program. Other significant projects in which she is involved include a National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technological Education grant and an education grant from the United States Department of Agriculture Hispanic Serving Institute (USDA-HSI) National Program. A member of the Council for Academic Management for the e-learning portal www.eArmyU.com, Dr. Gonzales also serves on the Executive Board of the Higher Learning Commission/North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

CAROLYN SCHUBACH, MA
DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM, K-12, MURRAY
(UTAH) SCHOOL DISTRICT

Currently Director of Curriculum K-12 for Murray School District in Salt Lake City, Carolyn Schubach has worked in education as a teacher, elementary school principal, secondary school principal, and gifted program coordinator. She has served as the president of both the Utah (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) (UASCD) and the Cooperative Learning in Utah Education (CLUE), and as director of the Utah Principals Academy.

PATRICK SCOTT, PH.D

PUBLIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Patrick (Rick) Scott retired in 2006 as Professor of Bilingual Mathematics Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at New Mexico State University where he taught elementary and secondary mathematics education courses, and directed a Math and Science Partnership program called Mathematically Connected Communities. A member of the U.S. Commission on Mathematical Instruction, Rick serves on the boards of the National Association of State Science and Math Coalitions, the Interamerican Math Education Committee, the North American Study Group on Ethnomath and the New Mexico Partnership for Math and Science Education.

KIP TELLEZ, PH.D
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA,
SANTA CRUZ

Kip Téllez, Associate Professor in the Education Department, is a former elementary and high school English Language Development (ELD) teacher in La Puente, California. He now teaches courses in ELD methods to graduate students earning their credential while serving as Director of Teacher Education at UCSC. His research interests include second language education, teacher education, and the intersection of the two. He has published in journals such as Educational Researcher, the Bilingual Research Journal, and Teaching and Teacher Education. He co-edited (with Hersh Waxman) a recent book titled Preparing Quality Educators for English Language Learners.

JO WORTHY, PH.D
PROFESSOR, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN
A former middle and elementary school teacher, Jo Worthy specializes in language and literacy education teaching graduate research and methods courses in the teacher preparation program. Additionally, she directs a reading tutorial program at an elementary school in Austin and conducts research on teacher preparation, reading preferences and interests, and students who are not well served by schools.
