MCCARTHEY DRESSMAN EDUCATION FOUNDATION

SCHOLARSHIP/MENTORING PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Each year, the Foundation will award four scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each, to college students enrolled in teacher education programs at the University of Texas at Austin and New Mexico State University. The scholarships are for one year, provided the eligibility requirements continue to be met. A trustee of the Foundation will be significantly involved with the recipient in the successful completion of her or his degree/licensure/certificate by being available to discuss course selection, projects and other issues; by providing advice, support, and encouragement; and by assisting the student in developing a team of mentors.

Eligibility--students who

  1. Are full-time in the final year of the teacher education program
  2. Specializing in elementary or secondary education (undergraduate or post-baccalaureate)
  3. In good academic standing at their institutions

Evaluation and Selection Criteria

  1. Applicants must be eligible for student teaching/internship/practica in the year in which the scholarship is awarded.
  2. University grades and academic accomplishments.
  3. Recommendations from university/college instructors.
  4. Information gleaned by interviews or letters concerning the applicant’s motivation, character, ability, and potential.
  5. Financial need.
  6. Quality of the written responses to the application.
  7. No applicant will be discriminated against on the basis of race, religion, national or ethnic origin or other illegal discriminatory categories.
  8. No applicant who is related by blood or marriage to any officer, trustee, employee, or independent contractor retained by the Foundation is eligible to apply.
  9. No person who selects recipients can be in a position to derive a private benefit, directly or indirectly, if certain potential recipients are selected over others.

On-Going Eligibility Criteria

  1. Each semester, the recipient must provide the Foundation with a transcript indicating that she or he has maintained a B average or higher and is enrolled (or has graduated from) the teacher education program. The transcripts must indicate specific courses taken.
  2. The recipient must also demonstrate that she or he has enrolled for a suitable number of hours to graduate on schedule and has met, or is prepared to meet at an appropriate time, any thesis/senior paper or other special requirements for graduation that are imposed generally on teacher education students in the program in which the recipient is enrolled.

Application Requirements

  1. Complete the Application Form.
  2. Attach the Scholarship/Mentoring Narrative Form.
  3. Attach two letters of support or arrange to have references mailed or e-mailed to the Foundation and received by the deadline.
  4. Send most recent official transcript.
  5. May be interviewed by telephone or in person.

Expectations/Monitoring

  1. Meet with faculty mentor at regular intervals.
  2. Refrain from full- or part-time employment during the student teaching/internship/practice semester.
  3. Provide official transcripts at the end of each semester during the award year.
  4. Provide a copy of the teaching certificate/licensure.
  5. Participate in an exit interview with the faculty mentor, focusing on the ways in which the award supported the successful completion of the final year of the teacher education program.

Timeline

1. Applications postmarked by May 1.
